The Ö-Files started in 2006, because I wanted to have a place to publish stuff. For more than 15 years, the site has relied on Zope 2 as content management system, with some modules no longer in development for at least that long. I kept a completely outdated version of Python 2.4 around just to continue using this setup. Technically, Zope and especially TAL are fantastically powerful and versatile tools, but those traits have seldom been a guarantee for success...
At the end of 2023 I started looking for a different solution, and finally settled on MkDocs and the Material theme. With a few tweaks, I was able to recreate most of the features that were near and dear to me from the old web site - although I miss some things. One piece of information every page on the web should have, at least in my opinion, is the time of its last update.
This site is running on a NetBSD server with most of the software provided by pkgsrc. For some years now it is hosted in the Netherlands by LiteServer, which do not only offer thousands of Linux distros like many other ISPs, but are one of the few affordable hosters that allow installation from custom ISOs.
